A Gentler Way to Start the Morning

Why a slower first five minutes can make room for a more attentive and prayerful day.

Many mornings begin with a question we did not choose: What happened while I was asleep? We reach for the phone and immediately inherit everyone else’s urgency.

There is another way to begin. It is not about rejecting technology or pretending responsibilities do not exist. It is about choosing your first response before the world supplies one for you.

A five-minute morning liturgy

Try keeping this short enough that you can repeat it on an ordinary weekday:

  • Be still: take three slow breaths.
  • Be grateful: name one gift without explaining it away.
  • Be honest: tell God what you are worried about.
  • Be available: ask, “What kind of person can I be today?”

Silence may feel awkward at first. That does not mean it is empty. Sometimes the first thing prayer gives us is the chance to notice how noisy we have become.

Let the practice stay small

A small practice is not a lesser practice. It is often the one that survives a busy season. Keep a Bible, journal, or printed prayer somewhere visible. Put your phone across the room. Make the next step obvious.

When the morning goes sideways, return to one sentence:

Lord, meet me here, and teach me to pay attention.

You do not need to recreate an ideal morning. You only need to make a little room for the present one.
